Synthetic Mermaids

L’adolescenza, già interpretata dalle teorie Freudiane come “disturbo evolutivo”, comporta un aumento della vulnerabilità a fronte di una vera e propria tempesta di stimoli emotivi; e mentre la “metamorfosi” fisica è regolata dalla natura, la crescita interiore è realizzata individualmente con meccanismi di difesa, coraggio, adattamento. Per questo le protagoniste di Synthetc Mermaid sono raffigurate come fragili ma eroiche sirene, esseri metamorfici per eccellenza. Stilisticamente richiamano le figure preraffaellite, in totale simbiosi con la natura: gli occhi chiusi, i movimenti rallentati, una sensualità latente. Solo alla fine del percorso gli occhi saranno aperti, e sarà uno sguardo al quale non ci potremo sottrarre, perché le sirene sono uscite dall’acqua, lasciando tracce della loro vittoria e dei loro sogni ….

Adolescence, already interpreted by Freudian theories as “developmental disturbance”, implies an increase of vulnerability against a real storm of emotional stimulation; and whilst physical “metamorphosis” is ruled from nature, that’s not what happened with interior growth, individually gained with extraordinary mechanism of defense, courage and adaptation. For this reason the protagonists of Synthetic Mermaids are portrayed as fragile but heroic mermaids, mythical metamorphic creatures. The portraits remind Pre-Raphaelites figures, in total harmony with nature: closed eyes, slow movements, a latent sensuality. Only at the end the eyes will be open, and it will be a look to which we’ll not be able to get out, as the mermaids are escaped from water, leaving signs of victory and dreams….
